The Faber Hob FH 40 AMD (Stainless Steel) is a purpose-built appliance for modern Indian kitchens that want the sleek, flush-mounted aesthetics of a built-in hob but refuse to deal with the shatter-anxiety of toughened glass. Dropping directly into your granite countertop, this hob utilizes highly refined Italian multi-flame burners that deliver an exceptional 70% gas efficiency, translating to real savings on your monthly LPG cylinder. While its unbreakable brushed steel chassis is a massive durability win, buyers must be prepared for two notable trade-offs: it relies entirely on manual ignition (requiring a lighter), and its highly compact 55.5cm footprint will cause large traditional Indian pots to crowd each other.
Key Performance Highlights
- ✅ Zero Shatter Risk: Premium brushed stainless steel completely eliminates the fragility of glass tops.
- ✅ 70% Fuel Efficiency: Genuine Italian multi-flame burners maximize heat distribution to save LPG.
- ✅ Compact Integration: The 55.5cm width drops flush into smaller granite counters, preserving prep space.
- ✅ Heavy-Duty Stability: Thick cast iron pan supports ensure massive pressure cookers sit without wobbling.
- ✅ Thermal Shielding: Specially coated heat-resistant knobs stay comfortable to touch during long simmering.
An excellent investment if you want a premium modular look with the unbreakable soul of steel and class-leading gas efficiency. However, skip this entirely if you need auto-ignition or if you regularly use four large utensils (like wide tawas and handis) simultaneously, as the layout is simply too cramped.

The Steel vs. Glass Debate: Indestructible Peace of Mind
The current trend in modular kitchens heavily heavily leans towards black toughened glass hobs. However, in heavy-handed Indian kitchens where massive cast-iron kadhais are dropped onto pan supports, glass carries a lingering, anxiety-inducing risk of shattering. The Faber FH 40 AMD utilizes a premium brushed stainless steel top that entirely eliminates this thermal and physical shock risk. It gives you the flush, sunken aesthetic of a European built-in hob with the rugged, unbreakable soul of a traditional Indian gas stove. The trade-off? Brushed steel shows micro-scratches easily; if you attack a turmeric spill with a green Scotch-Brite pad, you will permanently scar the finish.
The 55.5cm Traffic Jam: Navigating a 4-Burner Compact Frame
Faber heavily markets this as a multi-tasking 4-burner powerhouse, but we need to inject a dose of spatial reality. At just 55.5 cm wide, this hob is incredibly compact. While this is a massive advantage if you have limited granite counter space, it creates a traffic jam on the stove. You cannot place four large utensils on this hob simultaneously. When we placed a wide biryani handi on the bottom-left burner, it completely blocked access to the top-left burner. This hob functions best as a “2 Large + 2 Small” setup—perfect for a pressure cooker, a frying pan, a tadka pan, and a chai pot working in tandem.
Manual Ignition on a Built-In Hob: A Strange Omission
The Italian multi-flame burners are phenomenally efficient, yielding up to 70% fuel efficiency which will noticeably reduce your monthly gas cylinder costs. However, Faber made a baffling engineering choice for a built-in hob in this price bracket: it lacks auto-ignition. Built-in hobs are supposed to offer a seamless, luxury experience. Having to reach for a plastic lighter or matchbox every time you want to turn on a flush-mounted modern cooktop breaks that premium illusion. It’s a mechanical simplification that ensures long-term reliability (no batteries or spark plugs to fail), but it feels decidedly old-school.
The Pros (Where It Shines)
- Zero Shatter Risk: The stainless steel chassis is practically indestructible compared to toughened glass alternatives.
- 70% Gas Efficiency: Highly optimized Italian burners stretch your LPG cylinder lifespan significantly.
- Compact Footprint: At 55.5cm wide, it delivers a 4-burner setup without eating up your entire kitchen prep counter.
- Flush Integration: Sits beautifully inside a granite cutout, offering a premium modular aesthetic.
The Cons (The Reality Check)
- Manual Ignition Only: Lacks the battery-operated auto-spark expected in modern built-in appliances.
- Vulnerable to Scratches: The brushed steel finish requires dedicated microfiber cleaning to maintain its looks.
- Weak Warranty: 1-year comprehensive warranty is noticeably brief compared to competitors offering 5-year burner coverage.
- Crowded Layout: Cannot accommodate four large pots simultaneously; utensils will physically collide.
Who Is This Actually For? (Target Demographics & ROI)
This hob is purpose-built for pragmatic modular kitchen upgraders who have “glass anxiety.” If you have witnessed a glass cooktop shatter or you employ domestic help who are particularly aggressive with heavy pots, this steel built-in hob offers total peace of mind. The ROI sits firmly in its 70% fuel efficiency rating and the fact that you will never have to pay for a replacement glass top.
If your daily cooking routine involves using multiple oversized vessels simultaneously—like a 7-liter pressure cooker, a wide dosa tawa, and a massive wok—do not buy a 55.5cm 4-burner hob. You will be physically unable to center your pots over the flames. You must look for an “Extra Wide” 70cm+ model to avoid intense utensil crowding.

Essential Companion Purchases
1. Premium Microfiber Towels
Brushed stainless steel is a magnet for fine scratches. Throw away your abrasive green scrubbers and exclusively use plush microfiber cloths to wipe down this hob after cooking.
2. Long-Reach Gas Lighter
Since this premium built-in hob lacks auto-ignition, a high-quality, long-reach stainless steel piezo lighter is a mandatory accessory to keep right next to the stove.
Expert Editorial Summary
- The Faber Hob FH 40 AMD successfully merges the sleek flush aesthetics of a modern built-in hob with the indestructible nature of traditional stainless steel.
- Its Italian multi-flame burners deliver an outstanding 70% thermal efficiency, making it one of the most cost-effective hobs for long-term gas cylinder savings.
- The ultra-compact 55.5cm width is a double-edged sword: it saves vital counter space but causes physical crowding if you try to use four large pots simultaneously.
- The baffling inclusion of manual ignition and a brief 1-year warranty hold it back from absolute perfection, but for heavy-handed cooks terrified of shattering glass, this is a top-tier upgrade.
Test Kitchen Showdown
While sleek black glass hobs dominate modern modular kitchen showrooms, stainless steel remains the undisputed, indestructible workhorse of the traditional Indian home. To determine if the built-in Faber FH 40 AMD is truly worth its premium positioning, we had to test it against the two reigning champions of the heavy-duty freestanding category: the Glen 1045 SS HF BB (Extra Wide) and the Prestige Perfect Plus 04B (Seamless Design).
During our Kerala test kitchen evaluation, we didn’t treat these gently. We simulated a chaotic Sunday morning breakfast rush. We fired up all four burners simultaneously, attempting to fit a massive dosa tawa, a 5-liter pressure cooker, a tea saucepan, and a deep-frying kadhai. We evaluated how their unique burner geometries handled raw heat output, and most importantly, how painful they were to clean after a deliberate dal boil-over.

1. The Dimensional Reality: Compact Aesthetics vs. Freestanding Utility
The Faber drops flush into your countertop, offering an undeniably premium European aesthetic that freestanding stoves simply cannot match. However, its 55.5cm width is a severe bottleneck for authentic Indian cooking. When we attempted to place a 30cm dosa tawa next to a 5-liter pressure cooker on the Faber, they physically collided, forcing us to shift one off-center from the flame. The Glen 1045, boasting a massive 70cm “Extra Wide” chassis, handled the exact same vessel combination flawlessly with inches to spare. If you actually intend to use all four burners simultaneously with large pots, the Glen completely outclasses the Faber in sheer spatial utility.
2. Thermal Delivery: Italian Multi-Flame vs. Jumbo Brass Power
Faber utilizes highly refined Italian multi-flame burners designed to optimize gas consumption, pushing an impressive 70% thermal efficiency. This is brilliant for slow-simmering curries and saving money on LPG cylinders. However, traditional Indian cooking often requires raw, vertical brute heat for tasks like deep-frying pooris or bringing massive pots of water to a boil. Both the Glen and Prestige models utilize heavy forged brass “Jumbo” burners specifically engineered to blast concentrated heat upwards. The Faber provides elegant, efficient heat distribution, but the freestanding rivals offer superior raw boiling horsepower.
3. The Cleanup Grind: Flush Integration vs. Seamless Engineering
When milk boils over, built-in hobs become a chore. The Faber’s brushed steel looks beautiful, but aggressively scrubbing burnt residue out of its fixed burner wells risks leaving permanent scratch marks on the premium finish. The Prestige Perfect Plus 04B absolutely dominates the maintenance category. It features a 1mm thick, single-sheet seamless body with zero joints or screws where grease can hide, paired with easily removable spill trays. You simply pull the trays out, wash them in the sink, and wipe the flat steel deck—a much faster process than detailing the Faber’s flush-mount crevices.
Definitive Buying Verdict
- Buy the Faber Hob FH 40 AMD if: You are undergoing a modular kitchen renovation, demand a flush built-in look but refuse to risk shattering a glass top, prioritize maximum (70%) LPG fuel efficiency, and typically cook with smaller-to-medium vessels.
- Buy the Glen 1045 SS HF BB if: You cook for a large family, frequently use oversized cookware like massive handis and wide tawas, and need an extra-wide 70cm footprint to comfortably run all four burners at once.
- Buy the Prestige Perfect Plus 04B if: You want maximum durability on a strict budget, desire the raw cooking power of double Jumbo burners, and absolutely despise the chore of cleaning grease out of tight stove crevices.

We had this same model for 15 years, and it was working fine. Only some of the burners and switches had worn out.
We decided to get a new one. Surprisingly 99% of the models in showrooms are the new glass type hobbs. But when we thought about it, we realised the Stainless Steel one is the best for our home and type of vessels and cooking. So we ordered the same online. It was delivered on time, though the packaging was a little wet due to heavy rains – but the product inside was brand new.
We got a call and a technician came on the 3rd day after delivery to install. He was young – but knowledgeable and professional – and did an excellent job of removing the previous hobb and installing the new one. He had all the tools and spare parts including the rubber (steel reinforced) hose.
He gave a proper receipt for the charges and politely refused to take any tips (seemed to be very young and toiling with a heavy bag going around doing installations, so I thought I should be a little grateful.).

When I received the order, the box was damaged. I proceeded to open the box, the stove had scratches and marks all over it. So many parts for missing like the top of the burner. When we placed the order, we were so excited and now receiving this product like this that looks like a rejected product was very disappointing and disheartening.
